Root Canal

What is a root canal therapy procedure?

Root canal therapy is performed in order to save a tooth that is badly decayed or infected. This occurs when the dental pulp where the nerves and the blood vessels of the teeth are located are infected or damaged by decay or trauma. The pulp is removed, inside of the tooth is cleaned and disinfected, and then sealed from top to bottom.

Do root canal procedures hurt?

It is often portrayed in media that root canals are painful procedures. A large majority of patients do not feel any different than any other procedure such as having a filling done. You are anesthetized (numb) for the procedure so the discomfort you had before coming in is much worse.

How do I know if I need root canal therapy?

Chronic, dull, spontaneous, lingering discomfort and any combination of them often indicate that there is trouble with the nerve in the tooth. Sometimes the tooth may not hurt at all but still may require root canal therapy. Signs to look for would be darkening of the tooth and if a bump arises above the tooth in the gum tissue.

How long will I have to take off of work or school?

The most sensitivity, if any experienced, occurs in the first 24-48 hours. Nearly everyone is able to attend school or work the very next day.
